Photographer takes pictures of his daughter for 32 years

:
Allison Radcliffe captured for 32 years
This is astonishing... like any parent, Jack Radcliffe wanted to photograph his daughter to document the beginning of her life. Different from other parents, Radcliffe is actually able to take great photos.

His purpose changed over the years, though. Read it from his website:

"When my daughter Alison was born, in the tradition of a new parent, I began to photograph her, initially in a separate and private body of work. However, in the process of documenting Alison's growth, I developed a passionate interest in human relationships and capturing intimate moments in the lives of family and friends."

It's beautiful, as he captured some incredible images of Alison's life, especially at important moments in her life. It would have been tough, but she collaborated with her father, like the daughter of a photographer should.

"My photographs of Alison, because of the nature of our relationship, are very much a father-daughter collaboration-Alison permitting me access to private moments of our life, which might, under different circumstances, be off-limits to a parent"

See the photos!

Thanks for sharing, the website's cool too, the amount of pictures this guy must have been taking is crazy.

...and the dodgy boyfriends.

Ahmed, I think that's part of what's amazing about this project... a normal father would have been critical, the daughter would have hidden that part of her life away. The photos exist as a medium to bring them closer together.

anon, you're welcome!

tracy, they are beautiful... do you think it's because we know something about the subject?

great photography yes, she doesn't look very happy, not sure i'd want a dad obsessed with taking a pic of everything i did.. but she seems ok with it.. i wonder..

Cib I agree, he has obviously blurred the lnes between artist and father to capture something truly amazing; intimate and free at the same time. Musta been hard for a Father ad Daughter realtionship to get to that place and even harder to sustain it through thick and thin.

Am kinda weirded out by them, agree with Ahmed that there is something utterly voyeuristic about the artist's eye, especially since he's her father, but yet something creepily beautiful about them. Like photo-journalists who are not 'judging' their subject matter, there is the element of capturing something authentic, but you can see how 'observed' Alison feels in some of those images - taking a photo of herself with a polaroid, the full-lipped pout.
Not sure. Dad seems a little obsessed with his daughter, which always makes me feel a little yeuch in my belly.

Cibbuanao, the point of the matter is she's smoking and her father isn't doing anything about it. A good father-daughter relationship would probably involve upfront honesty presented by *both* parties. If the father in this case thinks it's ok to smoke then he's crazy.

Wow. Astonishing.

I think, this represents how the father as a photographer is trying to relate to his daughter, both from a father's point of view as well as having to capture these moments from an outsider's point of view. Sometimes a photograph needs this type of relationship to appear true and I think this is a great project.

If you take away the fact that it's a father taking photos of his daughter then these photos are quite beautiful.

For me, the one that stands out is the laughing one. Probably because she seems so solemn in all the other ones, but I think he's captured the comical element well.

I like that they're all in BnW too. If nothing else it saves us having to look at some of those tragically fashionable colours she would have been wearing in the '80 and '90s!

there is something so spiritual about watching a persons life unfold through a small collection of images. you get the feeling that you learn as much about the father as you do about the daughter; the fact that he had such an intimate undertsanding of his daughter is something that is enviable in a certain way. i really admire these photographs for their poetics as for their hanuting simplicity.

on a side note - i love images of smoking - any one smoking i dont see an issue with that at all in fact i think it adds something more

thank you for adding these photographs!

What a fabulous collection of photos. The images are an amazing glimpse into Alison's life. They felt intensely personal.

And as for the father being obsessed with his daughter, aren't all parents infatuated with their children? He just happens to be an artist and Alison is his daughter and his subject. I thought they were beautiful.

Those were truly amazing series of photos, you can feel a lot of emotion in them all. Not your usual family album... but thats whats so fantastic about them.
