Iranian Acid Thrower gets eye-for-an-eye
:
It's a story that give you chills: an Iranian man who was rejected for marriage decided to get even by flinging acid in the face of the woman he loved.
As punishment, the Iranian courts have decreed that he must have his eyes burned out with acid.
From the article:
"The man, identified only as Majid, proposed several times but was spurned by the woman, known as Ameneh, the daily paper reported.
In revenge, he threw acid in her face as she left her work in 2004, it added.
She travelled to Spain for surgery to reconstruct her face but efforts to restore her sight failed."
It's hard to know where to stand - one part of me thinks that evil bastard deserves his fate, as, even now, he's unapologetic, giddy with the idea that the woman is his 'forever'.
On the other hand, the punishment scares me, that the courts could decide to inflict so much pain and suffering. It's a dangerous government that has this power.
The article also has a picture of before and after the attack, and the bright, cheerful eyes of the woman shine bright, only to be gone forever. If only we had a new pair of eyes for her.
I put up a picture of lollipops as a way of bringing some measure of calm to this story - it's only one incident, but it says so much about the insecurity, jealously and rage that can happen in any part of the world. This story could have easily have happened here, or in Jamaica, or in Norway - but the press picks up on the story from Iran because of similar attacks that have happened in the Middle East recently.
Enjoy the lollipop.

Calm is needed, though. We can't let anger and vengeance dictate what we think is a just response.
