That must've been an incredible sight, and just a little intimidating. Why do dolphins leap out of the water like that? Are they showing off? Are they winking at the people in the boat? Or does it get boring down there in the ocean, holding your breath all the time?
Dolphins sleep by shutting down one-half of their brain at a time, since they still need to rise to the surface to breathe. That sounds exhausting...like their continually hungover on a Monday morning. When you hear about the Yangtse River dolphin, now most likely extinct, after being jarred by explosions, pollution, noise and fishing lines, you can't blame them for giving up.
