10 Most Bizarre Scientific Papers
:
From this post on Oddee.com, a list of the 10 most bizarre scientific publications.
Naturally, the '10 most bizarre' is quite a subjective list, but there's no denying that some of this research is just damn strange.
Pressures Produced When Penguins Poo -- Calculations on Avian Defecation
V. Breno Meyer-Rochow and J. Gal; International University of Bremen and Lorand Eotvos University of Hungary; 2005
These happy-go-lucky scientists noticed that penguins can poo quite far. Rather than just grimacing and moving on, like the rest of us troglodytes, they proceeded to calculate the exact pressure required to fire bird excrement over a distance of 40 cm.
While this may not be such an important result, it could pave the way to research with immeasurable social worth: calculating the pressure in the rectum of a customer at Taco Bell after having the 3-Layer Gasoline Hot Nachos and Burnin' Man Burritos. This would help us explain the expressions of people leaving the mall food court in a hurry.
Love and Sex with Robots
D. Levy; University of Maastricht; 2007
Actually, I don't find this so strange at all. In fact, I bet the guy that made the first robot was a really lonely engineer attempting to build himself some satisfaction. Orble has a thin link to robots, but I don't think this was part of the strategic vision.
Still, one could argue we're already there. Women use vibrators and those Real Dolls are getting creepier by the second. Aren't those robots, or do we have to include some decision making in the definition? That's dangerous ground to travel, though... if we give robots limited intelligence, eventually, some robot will reject a lonely engineer somewhere, causing a Terminator-style apocalypse.
